Connectivity
Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s High Representative on Rohingya and other priorities, said at a media briefing today that there are enough possibilities for a meeting between Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit on April 4. He made the comment at a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy Thursday.
On the condition of anonymity, a diplomatic source also confirmed that the meeting between Yunus and Modi will take place on April 4. However, the details are still being worked out.
He also mentioned that Bangladesh had earlier requested a meeting between Prof Yunus and Modi.
This sub-regional organization, BIST-EC, came into being on 6 June 1997 through the Bangkok Declaration. It constitutes seven Member States: five deriving from South Asia and two from Southeast Asia.
Following the inclusion of Myanmar on 22 December 1997 during a special Ministerial Meeting in Bangkok, the Group was renamed ‘BIMST-EC’ (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand Economic Cooperation). With the admission of Nepal and Bhutan at the 6th Ministerial Meeting (February 2004, Thailand), the name of the grouping was changed to ‘Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation’ (BIMSTEC).
